William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in a small town in England called Stratford-upon-Avon. In the same year, a deadly disease called the plague came to his town. Many people died, but baby William stayed alive.
When he was 18, William married Anne Hathaway. She was a few years older than him. They had a daughter, Susanna, and then twins, a boy called Hamnet and a girl called Judith.
A few years later, Shakespeare went to London. He became an actor, and he also wrote plays. His plays were very popular. Later, his group of actors had their own theatre, called the Globe.
Sometimes the plague came back, and the theatres in London had to close. Then Shakespeare wrote long poems instead.
Shakespeare wrote more than 35 plays. Some of the most famous are Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and Macbeth. People still watch and read them all over the world.
Near the end of his life, Shakespeare went back to Stratford. He died there in 1616, when he was 52. More than 400 years later, he is still one of the most famous writers in the world.
