Louis XIV became King of France in 1643, when he was only four years old. He was too young to rule, so his mother and an important minister ruled for him.
When he was 22, Louis began to rule France by himself. He was king for 72 years – longer than any other king of France.
Louis wanted everyone to see how powerful he was. He chose the sun as his symbol, so people called him “the Sun King”.
He turned a small hunting house at Versailles, near Paris, into a huge palace. It has hundreds of rooms and a famous Hall of Mirrors. The gardens have long paths, lakes and many fountains. Thousands of people worked on it for many years.
Life in the palace was full of luxury and strict rules. But Louis also fought many wars, and they cost a lot of money. Many ordinary people in France were poor and paid high taxes.
Louis XIV died in 1715. He was important in the history of France, but not everyone was happy with him. Today, millions of visitors go to see his palace at Versailles every year.
