Chalk is a soft white rock. It is made from tiny sea plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. When they died, their tiny shells fell to the bottom of the sea. Very slowly, the shells became chalk.
Today, some hills and cliffs are made of chalk. Chalk is easy to dig out of the ground, and there is a lot of it, so it is cheap.
When people heat chalk in a very hot oven, it changes into a new substance. This substance is called lime.
People use lime in many ways. Builders mix it with sand and water to make mortar. Mortar holds bricks together. People also paint walls with lime wash to make them white. Farmers put lime on their fields to help some plants grow better. Lime is also used to make glass.
Be careful! Lime can burn your skin and eyes. Never touch it without an adult.
